Men's Club Tournament Descriptions
Whack and Hack:
This is a 4 Ball Best Ball event where the team score is comprised of the lowest and highest individual scores recorded for that hole, combined together to create the team score for the hole.
The purpose for this format as in the three hole progressive, is to keep all players in the foursome involved in doing their best for the team. All four players scores should be recorded on each hole as net players scores may vary from the gross players scores.
Hate Em:
This is a variation of an Individual gross/net event in which you pre-select on the 1st tee, 3 holes that always give you trouble. A par will be recorded by the starter on those three holes. The other fifteen you will still have to work for. For the purpose of your Ringers score should you be in the Ringers event, if you actually make birdie on any of the 3 pre-selected holes, it will be counted on your Ringers score but the pre-selected par will be used for the weekend tournament. Choose wisely and you should have 3 net birds or eagles before you even hit the ball.
Blind Partner:
Play your round as you normally do and with who ever you want. A partner will be randomly drawn by the computer for you. Your cards will be matched and scored as a two ball best ball. Payouts will be both gross and net. Your partner will be disclosed in the results so you can buy him a drink when his scoring elevates your mediocre round to the winners list.
Alternate Shot:
This is a great test of golf and of your relationship with your partner. We will use a Modified Alternate Shot format in that both players will hit their drives. It’s strategy from that point as you will alternate shots from therein until holed. If your drive is selected, your partner will hit the next shot. The best drive position or the best approach player will be the decision at hand. We are requiring a minimum of 6 tee shots from each partner during the 18 holes though. Flights will be determined by team combined handicaps, and teams will have a minimum combined handicap, at this point we believe to be 8. It is best not to score how many times you apologize to your partner.
Cha Cha Cha:
A variation of the Progressive 4 Ball. In this version, you use the one best ball on the 1st hole for your team score. The next hole you use the two best ball scores combined to create you r team score for that hole, and on the third hole you add the three best scores together for your team score on that hole. This cycle continues throughout the 18 holes. The purpose of this format is to keep players in the game, rather than in their pocket. The pressure is on for more than just your team horse.
Seniors/Super Seniors/Legends Championship:
This is the Club Championship for the elderly, and not yet senile! This event is an 18 hole Gross only event to determine a champion for 3 age related flights. Seniors will be from 50 to 59. Super Seniors will be from 60 to 69. And Legends will be 70 and older. This year you will be able to participate in this event while simultaneously competing in the weekend 2 Man Best Ball event. We kept it at 18 holes this year in consideration of the aging competitors. (Canes are not allowed on the greens) This will be a trophy event for the winner of each flight.
Ryder Cup Team Event:
While we are still working on some of the details, we hope this will be the 1st annual Ryder Cup event pitting two teams of Topstone competitors against each other. Team Captains will be chosen, perhaps the club Pro and his Assistant. The size of the teams will depend on the number of players attempting to qualify for the teams. We are thinking 12 per team but could grow that number to 16 or 20.
Qualifying -Players will pay a one time entry fee and every round of golf played can be used as their qualifier round until the end of July. This gives you 20 weekends to improve your qualifier score. Their best round gross and net will be used to determine if they are among the top 12, 16, 20, players both gross and net.
In the case of using 12 man teams, the best 12 gross and best 12 net winners will be selected and teams mixed and matched to select two teams of equal handicaps as best as possible. Everyone regardless of their handicap has the ability to qualify for this team event.
What are you playing for? Besides honor, part of the answer to this depends on just how many members attempt to qualify. We are looking to provide team shirts to each player monogrammed with the Topstone 08 Ryder Cup logo. Approximately a $50 value. We also are looking to pay the winners prize money. All of this will be determined by the monies raised through qualification fees. If 150 players pay to qualify between March and August, we will have $1500 dollars to work with. If we can get half our membership to attempt to qualify, we will have close to $2000. It would be nice to tee up 16 per team. Shirts would cost around $1000 and the winners would each win around $50. So for $10, you could earn a $100 value.
Match Play Format: Matches will consist of two man pairings and will be played using three formats. The first 6 holes will be Best Ball, second 6 will be Scramble, and the final 6 will be Modified Alternate Shot.
How do we add pressure? We are hoping to be able to open the course to spectators, caddies, standard bearers, applause and jeers. We will send the team matches out after the weekend Ryder Cup tournament players on Saturday September 13. As the field completes their rounds, they are welcome to go out and cheer on their friends or team. If your child wants to carry your bag, or carry your match record standard, we hope to be able to accommodate that. The captains will keep the clubhouse updated of the team and match standings throughout the round. We hope it will be a fun event for more than just the team players.
